Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum, King Louis XIV, King of France (1638–1715) (after Jean Petitot) by Claude Lefebvre (Fontainebleau 1632 – Paris 1675). 1670. Oval. Bust, turned to right, facing, gazing at spectator, wearing armour, white shirt with band of lace at the neck, the blue riband of the Order of Saint Esprit over the right shoulder, dark brown curly hair, grey eyes, very pale swarthy complexion with blue modelling, slight moustache. Engraved on reverse 'Lewis XIV'. No.20 in Guide 'Small miniature of King Lewis XIV, 1638-1715. This work is by Claude Le Febure who was born at Fontainebleu in 1632. He became a successful portrait painter, and in 1663 was elected a member of the Academy. He also worked in England where he met with much encouragement at the Court of Charles II.
