Summary
Oil painting on canvas, King George IV (1726-1830) leaving Ireland and embarking in Kingstown, 3rd September 1821 by William Turner (1767-1826), signed bottom right: WT (in monogram), 1821. Setting sun, red sky, large crowds surrounding George IV beneath large baldacchino at the entrance of a pier, the baldechino is surmounted by a crown and a tall central flagpole from which a flag is waving, Four other flags are set at each corner of the baldechino, the pillars of which are wrapped in red, white and blue swags attendant soldiers; pier and shipping.
Provenance
Owned by Charles Barrett where mentioned by W.Thorbury, in his Life of Turner, 1877 vol.II, p.397 (appendix) as by J.M.W.Turner; date of acquisition by Lord Fairhaven is unknown; bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
