Summary
Oil painting on paper laid down on canvas, Academic Study of a Male Nude, seen from Behind by William Etty RA (York 1787 – York 1849), 1830/35. Young man, three-quarter length nude, with his back turned to the spectator, he is resting on his right leg, his left arm raised over his head, so that his hand is resting just above his right ear, most of his outstretched right arm is outside the picture. Scarlet drape in background on left. Exhibited at Wakefield Industrial Exhibition.
Provenance
George Acton, New York; date of acquisition by Lord Fairhaven is unknown; bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
