Summary
Oil painting on panel, Called Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, Lord Protector Somerset (1506?-1552), German (South German) School, inscribed on painting 'Edward Seymout, Duke of Somerset, 1549 ... ... of King Henry' and coat-of-arms at left, 16th century. A head-and-shoulders portrait turned to left, gazing at spectator, reddish-brown beard and moustache, gold-embroidered black doublet, large black hat with jewelled hat-band with a hanging loop on the left beneath a black plume Somerset arms at left. Label on frame 'Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford, 1st Duke of Somerset, KG KB, 1500-1552. Lord Protector of these kingdoms. Painted 1549. Brother of Jane Seymour, 3rd wife of Henry VIII. Chancellor of the University of Cambridge 1547'.

Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
