Summary
Oil painting on panel, Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex (1566-1601) by Marcus Geeraerts the younger (Bruges 1561/2 - London 1635/6) and Studio, dated, top left: 1599. Almost half-length, turned slightly to right, gazing at spectator; reddish moustache and spade beard, dark reddish hair brushed away from forehead, ruddy complexion; wearing a white satin doublet with lace collar under a white linen ruff; the lesser George (not seen in this version) hangs from a dark green ribbon; dark brown background. From a full-length portrait at Woburn Abbey (Duke of Bedford).
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
