Summary
Portrait miniature, grey shades of watercolour painting on ivory, King Alfred (‘The Great’) (846/9 – 899) (after George Vertue). c.1780. Oval. Half-length turned three-quarters to right, gazing at spectator, wearing a crown and mantle, the portrait set in an oval frame lettered AELFREDUS MAGNUS REX ANGL. surrounded by trident, banner, arrows, lyre, books military encampment and a battle fleet.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
