Summary
Portrait miniature, grey shades of watercolour on ivory, King Egbert (769/80-839) (after George Vertue) by M. Coton (fl.1780-1790). c.1780. Oval. Bust portrait, profile to left, shoulder-length hair, wearing a crown set, in a circular shape in the form of a coin resting on a stand, a cartouche above lettered EGBERT, King of the WEST SAXONS / First Monarch of all ENGLAND to the left and right broken classical monuments, above his head seven shields and two coins, a vignette below of a male figure reclining on the ground beneath (the dying Egbert?) pointing with his right hand to a map of England, a spear held in the crook of his left arm, the ground strewn with military objects including a sword and shield. In a case of miniature paintings of Kings of England from Egbert to Henry V.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
