Caption
In this view of the Thames by John Thomas Serres, Waterloo Bridge (built eight years earlier in 1817) can be seen spanning the river. In the right foreground, on the south bank, a group of men appear to be unloading timbers from barges at the site of the new Lambeth Shot Mill. Completed in 1826, the Mill became a prominent landmark on the river and featured in a number of paintings, including by J. M. W. Turner. In the distance, the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral foregrounds a skyline populated by various steeples belonging to City churches designed by Sir Christopher Wren.
