Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Cara Leyland Rogers, Lady Fairhaven (1867-1939) by Sir Oswald Hornby Joseph Birley, RA (Auckland 1880 – 1952), 1925. A three-quarter-length portrait, seated, turned slightly to left, facing spectator, curled grey hair, wearing a puce silk dress with a square cut neck and short sleeves; she also has a gauze scarf or shawl wrapped around her shoulders and arms. Her right arm rests on the arm of her chair and her right hand rests in her lap, her left hand rests on the seat of her chair revealing that she is seated on an ermine cloak or drape. Around her neck is a rope of pearls hanging in five rows the shortest around her throat the longest to her waist. To the left is a table on which is a bowl or stand with a plant in flower or a tall arrangement of flowers.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
