Caption
As an art student Bonington made a tour of the coast and towns of northern France, drawing the picturesque ports with their fisherfolk and shipping in both watercolour and oils. These motifs recur often in his work. There are six versions of this subject, but it is unlikely that all are by Bonington. Here, as in his other landscapes, Bonington has managed to combine qualities of balance and tonal refinement usually associated with the French school of painting, with the naturalistic freedom of the English school.
