Summary
A polished steel strong box on a mahogany stand, The strong box German, circa 1800, the stand English, early 19th Century. The strong box with a hinged lid fitted with a beech and rosewood inlaid lining incorporating twelve variously sized drawers to the sides.The lid incorporating an intricate lock with twenty levers opening and closing on a two stage locking system behind an engraved brass and pierced lock plate. The lid of the box with a sliding handle to hide the key hole. The front of the box with an applied medallion of Napoleon I in profile with further flower head medallions to the corners and with carrying handles to the sides. The stand with moulded edge and frieze centred by a medallion carved with a bust of Lord Nelson and raised on angled square section legs headed by tablets carved with an 'N' and tied by a shelf stretcher with pierced fretwork carved gallery, termination on stylized lions paw feet.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
