Summary
The oak staircase, of cantilever construction, English, believed to have been built in 1618, with massive newel posts at the corners of the balustrade carved with grotesque heads and strap-work, the leopard of the Benthall crest occupies a panel at the turn of the stairs, a similar panel, a flight higher, contains the double-tailed lion from the coat of arms, Wyverns from the Cassy arms are carved in the panelling below the balustrading, the pierced strap-work balustrades are decorated with semi-spherical cabochons, the stair treads renewed after a fire in 1818.
