Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lady in Persian Dress by Frederick Richard Pickersgill (London 1820 - Isle of Wight 1900), circa 1840/50. A three-length portrait, probably the artist's wife, great-grandmother of the Hon.Lady Ruth Benthall, seated facing left by a table on which stands a covered jar, wearing Eastern costume. In 1847, Pickersgill married Mary Noorouz Elizabeth (1824/5–1886), the eldest daughter of James Hook, a judge in the mixed commission courts of Sierra Leone, and his wife, Eliza Frances Clarke; Mary was the sister of the landscape and history painter J. C. Hook (1819–1907). The couple had one son.
Provenance
Included on page 4 of the Inventory of Items On Loan To The National Trust For Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963. Bequeathed to the National Trust in the will of Michael Pickersgill Benthall (1919 – 1974). Accepted for ownership by The National Trust in 1975 following the death of Michael Pickersgill Benthall in 1974
