Summary
An oak armchair, West Country, early to mid 17th century, with carved stiff-leaf and strap-work detail, the arcaded back centred with a stylized flower, the later seat with lunette front rail on baluster legs joined by stretchers.
Full description
West Country furniture is typically busily carved and incorporates stiff-leaf and strapwork detail. In this example the back is further enriched with an arch containing a highly stylized flower.
Provenance
Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to The National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by The National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
