Summary
An oak armchair, West Country, probably Somerset, early to mid 17th century, with strap-work and stiff-leaf detail, scroll-carved top rail above a double heart motif carved to the panel, the later seat with lunette carved rails on column legs joined by stretchers.
Full description
West Country furniture is typically busily carved and incorporates stiff-leaf and strapwork detail. The double-heart motif (seen here in the back panel) is often associated with Somerset, although may feature in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire furniture and fixed woodwork too.
Provenance
Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to The National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by The National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
