Summary
An ash Turner's armchair, English or Welsh, late 16th or early 17th century, the high back applied with small buttons and turned finials, with triangular seat and large turned front posts, the surfaces with brown / black varnish applied in Victorian times.
Provenance
The story goes that this chair originally belonged to the Abbot of Neath Abbey near Swansea which was dissolved in 1538, which pushes our date-line forward by 50 years if true. Owned by Mary Clementina Benthall (1879-1960) and recorded in the 1957 list of pictures, furniture etc suggested for retention at Benthall Hall by the National Trust. Transferred to the ownership of the National Trust with the contents of Benthall Hall in the Deed Of Gift made by Mary Clementina Benthall and dated 8th August 1958. Recorded in the Inventory Of National Trust Property At Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963.
