Summary
Pencil on paper, The Road to Wyke and Benthall Hall, Shropshire by J. C. Bayliss (fl.1866 - d.1886/7). A tree-lined country lane to Wyke from the south; a pig and farmer in the foreground, two further figures in the distance; a farmhouse to the right behind a stonewall and garden. Inscribed - J.C.Bayliss (signed bottom left), AD 1842 (dated bottom right). The road to Wyke from the road leading from Broseley to Much Wenlock, The Wrekin in the distance and Benthall Hall on the right (hand written in pencil below drawing), 1842.
Provenance
Drawn by J.C. Bayliss in 1842 and originally one of a pair, the other believed to have been stolen. Owned by Mary Clementina Benthall (1879-1960) and recorded in the 1957 list of pictures, furniture etc suggested for retention at Benthall Hall by the National Trust. Transferred to the ownership of the National Trust with the contents of Benthall Hall in the Deed Of Gift made by Mary Clementina Benthall and dated 8th August 1958. Recorded in the Inventory Of National Trust Property At Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963.
