Summary

Pencil on paper, Sarah Ellen Harkness, Mrs Henry Benthall (d.1913) by Laura Benthall (1827-1912). Half-length portrait of a young lady, seated, turned slightly to the right and holding a handkerchief on her lap. Dark hair in a bun with ringlets, brown eyes and rosy complexion. Wearing lace trimmed dress and rectangular brooch. Unframed. Inscribed - Sarah Ellen Benthall - Croydon - 13th April 1846. LB (written in pencil on back), Sarah Ellen Benthall, Croydon 13 4.1846 Mother of Albert Benthall [1881-1961]Grandmother of Gilbert Mayer ? Bernard Frances and Arthur Lawrence Benthall [1887-1924] died in 95th year (written in black ink on label pasted on original backing paper, now glued to envelope containing drawing). 1846.

Provenance

Drawn in 1846 by Laura Benthall. Owned by Mary Clementina Benthall (1879-1960) and recorded in the 1957 list of pictures, furniture etc suggested for retention at Benthall Hall by the National Trust. Transferred to the ownership of the National Trust with the contents of Benthall Hall in the Deed Of Gift made by Mary Clementina Benthall and dated 8th August 1958. Recorded in the Inventory Of National Trust Property At Benthall Hall dated 1st October 1963.
