Summary
Heart-shaped dessert dish, flattened everted rim and raised on foot ring. Hand painted in underglaze blue with the 'Royal Lily' pattern, central water lily outlined in terracotta and some gilt decoration. There is a painted mark in the underglaze in blue in the shape of an “S”. A label on the base reads “CAUGHLEY BICENTENARY SHREWSBURY 1772-1972” with an additional red sticker label on top with number “270” on it. Made circa 1795 - 1800.
Provenance
Made in Shropshire circa 1797 - 1800. Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Bequeathed to the National Trust in the will of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall dated 28th July 1983. Accepted for ownership by the National Trust in 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992.
