Summary
Sucrier (sugar bowl with lid) of fluted form, the lid of which has a moulded mushroom finial. Printed in underglaze blue with 'Pagoda' pattern and associated scroll and butterfly border around inner rim and cover. Encircling bands of gilt, upper half of finial gilt. Inscribed with a printed mark in the underglaze of a blue “S” and an ‘X’ of crossed swords; both Caughley marks. Made circa 1775 - 1799 by Caughley Porcelain Works.
Provenance
Made in Shropshire circa 1775 - 1799. Owned by Sir Arthur Paul Benthall (1902 – 1992). Accepted in lieu of tax by H.M. Government in March 1993 following the death of Sir Arthur Paul Benthall in 1992 and allocated to the National Trust for display at Benthall Hall.
