Print, engraving, The Sleeping Congregation by William Hogarth (London 1697 - London 1764). An engraving depicting a scene in a church interior. Old man with dark hair in religious clothes stands in a pulpit holding a pair of spectacles in both hands. A woman sits beside the pulpit with her eyes closed, wearing a cloth cap and bow and low-cut boned dress. Her hands are resting on her lap; her right hand holds a fan, her left a small book. To the left, a group of men stand crowded together and above the preacher is a man in a pulpit reading a book. An inscription reads 'Invented Engraved & Published October 26 : 1736 by W.m Hogarth'; mounted within frame.
