Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Legh (1792-1857) and an Attendant by William Bradley (Manchester 1801 – Manchester 1857), circa 1820. A full-length portrait of a young man standing, head facing slightly to the right, with dark-haired moustache, in Turkish dress of striped red and gold turban, green and white striped vest, short green jacket with long sleeves embroidered with gold, a long blue velvet cloak, a red, gold and white striped sash at his waist with a stiletto dagger and ghost of another curved dagger against his left hip, loose white pantaloons, and short brown boots, beside his black Arabian stallion. In the lower right corner, an attendant is seated cross-legged, looking up at Thomas and wearing a turban, white tunic and white pantaloons. Thomas leans his right elbow on the stallion's saddle while holding the reins in his right hand. In his left hand he holds a curved dagger. Set within a landscape of trees and hills, with a blue but cloudy sky.
