Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Wodehouse Legh, 2nd Baron Newton (1857-1942) as a Boy with his Favourite Mastiff, 'Lady' by James William Cole (fl.1847-1882) or Solomon Cole (fl.1845-1859), 1861. A full-length portrait of a young boy, standing with tousled red hair wearing a short blue velvet frock, with full skirt and short sleeves, lace collar and wide blue sash, white ankle socks and black patent slippers. Standing beside a large Lyme mastiff which is lying by a column, his left hand resting on the dog's right ear, his left hand holding the collar. In the left foreground a black hat with red feathers, to the right a tennis ball. A valley landscape of hills, trees and a herd of deer is visible on left beneath a cloudy sky.
