Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Emily Jane Wodehouse, Lady Newton (1826-1901) by Attilio Baccini (fl.1859-1882), signed: A. Baccani / 1867. A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman, daughter of the Ven. Charles Wodehouse and wife of the first Lord Newton whom she married in 1856. She is turned to the left, looking over to the right, standing. Her red hair is dressed up with pearls and she is wearing a dark green velvet dress with the neckline trimmed with wide lace border and lace on the sleeves. The sleeves are long and slashed, revealing white under-garment. She wears a rose at her bosom, a red velvet purch/purse, trimmed with silver hangs from a belt. Pendant pearl earrings, necklace and bracelets. Her right hand rests on a letter on a table, her left hangs relaxed at her side holding black gloves. Set within an interior, a window to the left opening onto a coppice, to the right, top an impaled coat of arms.
