Summary
A seventeenth century, eight-day longcase clock in marquetry case; made by William Grimes. Flat top hood with glazed sides and twisted ebonised columns; marquetry design of animals around dial plate. Trunk door has top panel with a tree flanked by two figures, the central and lower panels have floral marquetry with a design of a tree surrounded by animals; standing on bun feet. The base has design of a large tree flanked by deer; pendulum lenticle in door. Square brass dial with winged cherub and scroll spandrels and silvered brass chapter ring engraved with Roman hour numbers; subsidiary dial inside chapter ring engraved with Arabic numbers 5-60. Engraved calendar aperture in dial centre; blue steel hands.
Provenance
Bequeathed for display at Lyme Park by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh, on his death in 1984. Part of an important collection of clocks acquired by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh (1919-1984), the youngest son of the Third Lord Newton.
