Summary
A late seventeenth century, eight-day longcase clock with grande sonnerie striking and repeating in marquetry case; made by Christopher Gould. Flat top hood with pierced frets and twisted columns. Case decorated in seaweed marquetry with a pendulum lenticle in trunk door and brass escutcheon; intricate marquetry design to trunk and base of scrolling mirrored seaweed. Square brass dial with winged cherub and scroll spandrels and silvered brass chapter ring engraved with Roman hour numerals; subsidiary dial inside chapter ring to the top. Blue steel hands with pierced decoration; engraved square calendar aperture inside chapter ring.
Provenance
Bequeathed for display at Lyme Park by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh, on his death in 1984. Part of an important collection of clocks acquired by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh (1919-1984), the youngest son of the Third Lord Newton.
