Summary
A seventeenth century, eight-day striking longcase clock in marquetry case; made by Henry Younge. Rising hood with glazed sides and break-arch dial; dial aperture has ivory and ebony chess-board design in perspective below. Case decorated in olivewood oyster veneers with a central, floral marquetry panel flanked by two half panels; standing on bun feet. Brass arch-top dial and engraving of a stairway flanked by low balustrade walls, below dial plate. Silvered brass chapter ring engraved with Arabic hour numbers with a smaller dial inside chapter ring engraved with 5-60. Blue steel hands with pierced decoration; engraved square calendar aperture inside chapter ring.
Provenance
Bequeathed for display at Lyme Park by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh, on his death in 1984. Part of an important collection of clocks acquired by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh (1919-1984), the youngest son of the Third Lord Newton.
