Summary
An eight day, English striking spring driven clock, mahogany bell top case with brass mounts; made by Moses Nicholason. Brass carrying handle and four urn finials to top of case; red silk lined cast brass frets of putti head and sun motif to sides and brass scroll feet. To each side of the front of the clock there is a brass female bust and pendant of flowers. Brass break arch dial with rococo spandrels and strike/silent dial in arch. Silvered brass chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute figures. Calendar aperture over the VI; blue steel hands. Engraved backplate with Prince of Wales feathers and 'Ich Dien' motto.
Provenance
Bequeathed for display at Lyme Park by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh, on his death in 1984. Part of an important collection of clocks acquired by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh (1919-1984), the youngest son of the Third Lord Newton.
