Summary
An eight-day, musical striking spring driven bracket clock in Japanned case; made by John Berry. Yellow and gilt Japanned break arch case with cupola top surmounted by a brass sphere and spire finial, the main body of clock with four smaller identical finials. Brass carrying handles and pierced frets to sides, four plinth feet. The oak carcass painted all over with Chinoisserie borders and scenes. Brass break arch dial with silver spandrels (two female heads to bottom) In arch time change dial with 'The Rummer, A jigg, Virgen of 15, Bury Fair, A March, A Minuett' over automated scene of fiddler and harp player in eighteenth century dress. Silvered brass chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and Arabic five minute figures, mock pendulum. Music operated at will by pull cord.
Provenance
Bequeathed for display at Lyme Park by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh, on his death in 1984. Part of an important collection of clocks acquired by Major the Hon. Sir Francis Legh (1919-1984), the youngest son of the Third Lord Newton.
