Summary
Plaster, Chimneypiece with overmantel with central coat-of-arms belonging to Elizabeth I, Long Gallery, Lyme Park. A 17th-century plaster overmantel with central coat-of-arms belonging to Elizabeth I. The coat-of-arms is painted in red, gold and blue and topped with a gold knight's head, in relief; winged masks and fruit flank the coat-of-arms. The friezes flanking the coat-of-arms have central protruding columns with arch-shaped mounts. The central columns are flanked by other columns with scrolling decoration and topped with male and female busts. Border underneath the friezes with a design of interlocking scrolling shapes and leaves.
Provenance
Original to the house. The overmantel was installed slightly earlier than the early seventeenth century oak panelling in the Long Gallery. (Lyme guide book 2000 edition, P.28)
