Full description
High quality silver mounted flintlock sporting gun, circa 1770, by Robert Wogdon, gunmaker, London (1748-1813). Wogdon has adapted a Spanish made barrel for use on this gun incorporating a unusual method of attaching the barrel to the wooden stock. Silver furniture, dated 1767 by John King, silversmith, London. Spanish-made iron barrel formed in 2 stages, octagonal to round, and separated by a turned moulding. The breech inlaid with silver lines and makers cartouche (insert missing). Gold lined touch-hole. Silver “spider” fore-sight. Engraved barrel tang and false breech formed with sighting channel. The barrel retained to stock by 4 engraved silver barrel bands which encompass the barrel and are then held by 4 barrel slides. Each barrel slide with engraved silver escutcheons. The rear barrel band is formed with large V-shaped sight. Barrel length 107cm Calibre 18mm. Walnut full stock, with detachable fore-stock. Shell carving around the barrel tang. The central left side of the stock is inlaid with silver wire in the form of flowers and foliage. Engraved silver furniture comprising; butt-plate, trigger guard with acanthus finial, and 3 ramrod pipes. The silver stamped with makers mark IK and London hall marks (date letter M). Scroll form trigger. Wooden ramrod. Engraved flintlock, the plate of flat form with bevelled edge and stepped behind the cock. Engraved with the makers name WOGDON, within a scroll shaped banner. Flat cock with bevelled edges. Frizzen with anti-friction roller. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length 147.5cm
