Summary
One of a pair of joined oak backstools, English, possibly Derbyshire, late 17th century and later. The back of two arched and cusped splats each with three turned pendant finials, the rear uprights with a marked rake, carved with lozenge-type shapes and topped by unusual outward scrolling finials. The seat boarded and raised on a pair of front legs turned with rings, squat balusters and blocks and with pear-shaped feet. The front mid-stretcher turned as a pair of balusters. The front seat rail with carved 'S'-scroll brackets. The rear and side stretchers plain.

Date of introduction to Canons Ashby not recorded, but at Canons Ashby as part of The Dryden Collection (acquired with the help of the National Heritage Memorial Fund) and transferred to The National Trust in 1980/1.
