Summary
A walnut and cane daybed, English, circa 1670 - 1680. The curved adjustable back adjusting on chains, and between octagonal block and spiral-turned posts. The seat caned and its rails incised with a diaper pattern. Raised on block and spiral-turned legs terminating in pear-shaped feet and joined by spiral-turned stretchers.
Provenance
Possibly the 'cane couch' listed in the Left Hand Parlour in the inventory taken at Canons Ashby in 1717. Probably the daybed visible in the Drawing Room in photographs published by Country Life in 1921. Sold on 4th July 1980 in a Berry Bros.' auction of furniture and books at Canons Ashby. Purchased by Mr. Robeson from whom the Trust purchased it later in 1980 with the help of a grant from the Victoria & Albert Museum.
