Summary
Marble, Statue of a Man in Oriental Costume, Roman.A marble statue from the 2nd century AD which possibly depicts the Procurator of an eastern province of the Roman Empire as the dress is Asiatic. The head turns slightly to the left with the gaze directed to the left and upward. The hair grows in great profusion and is massed over the forehead and ears, the upper lip and chin are covered by a moustache and soft beard. The dexter arm is raised to waist level and holds a small dish. The sinister arm is down by the side and holds a scroll.
Provenance
Collected by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, or by Charles, 2nd Earl of Egremont, thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72), arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M. Treasury.
