Summary
Pentelic marble with the head of Parian marble sculpture, Emperor Gallienus, Emperor of Rome (c. 213 - 268 AD). Roman, second century AD; marble seated figure of a man on a rectangular stone seat. The head of the Emperor Gallienus (c. AD 218-268), is 3rd century AD. From the Barberini Collection.
Provenance
From the Barberini Palace collection, Rome, and can be identified in the inventory drawn up there in 1738 as being 'without a head, without one arm and lacking a foot. Purchased in 1760 and imported to Britain in 1763 for Charles, 2nd Earl of Egremont. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72), arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M. Treasury.
