Caption
The Holy Roman Emperor is here shown wearing the Order of the Golden Fleece, a chivalric order, which was one of the most prestigious in Europe. On his hat there is a badge bearing a representation of the Virgin, as the apocalyptic woman, clothed with the sun, and the inscription ‘O Mother of God remember me.’
Summary
Oil painting on panel, Emperor Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain (1500-1558), Flemish School, circa 1516-1520. A half-length portrait, turned slightly to the right, gazing to the right, wearing a hat, a red tunic, and a black robe. He has a chain round his shoulders and he is holding a 'wand' in his left hand.
Provenance
In the collection of the 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837) by 1835 thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
