Caption

Calcott was born in Kensington, London, four years after Turner, whose chief follower and imitator he became, especially in the Dutch-inspired landscapes and seapieces. In this painting his composition owes everything to Turner's Egremont Seapiece. He was a pupil of Hoppner and entered the RA Schools in 1797. He and his wife, also an artist, travelled extensively on the Continent. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1799 until his death and the British Institution between 1806-1838, was elected an Associate of the Royal Acedmey (ARA) in 1806 and RA in 1810. He was knighted in 1837 and was made the Surveyor of the Royal Collection in 1843.
