Summary
An English, eighteenth century, carved wood frame for a full-length portrait (NT/PET/P/498) of the English School (circa 1573) either by or after Arnold van Bronckhorst (fl.1565-1598) of Sir Henry Sidney, K.G. (1529-1586).
Provenance
Recorded at Penshurt in 1737. Sold as part of the estate of Lady Sidney Sherard d.1758, Langford's Covent Garden, 10 May 1764, lot 3. Recorded at Petworth in 1798. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
