Summary
An eighteenth century English frame, with later added compo corners, for a landscape (NT/PET/P/36) with a man fishing by Gaspard Poussin (1613-1675). There is sand texturing on the flat frieze
Provenance
NT/PET/P/36 or one of the two paintings by Gaspard Poussin in the private collection at Petworth (L/PET/P/421, L/PET/P/424) may be the picture bought by the 2nd Earl of Egremont (1710-1763) at Major's sale, April 1751, lot 49a 'A Landskip' by Gaspard Poussin (bought at Major's sale, Ap.1751 Landscape Gaspar Poussin £9.19.6.'). Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
