Summary
A giltwood pier-table or "console", from a pair, circa 1755, the Roman gilt bronze mounted "bianco e nero" serpentine marble top above a frieze opening with three drawers and carved with a trellis pattern, centred by a lion's head and a pierced apron with festoons and scrolling acanthus leaves, on cabriole legs and scroll feet. The sides with further foliate scrolls and a mask. There is a long drawer at the back of the table, opening from the side.
Provenance
Probably acquired by the 2nd Earl of Egremont (1710-1763) as the 'bianco e nero' tables supplied in 1760 for Egremont House, Piccadilly, by 'Mr Wilton' probably Joseph Wilton RA (1722-1803). Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
