Summary
One of a pair, NT/PET/F/18.1, of elaborate carved mirrors of giltwood and glass. They have been variously described as English, Rococo, circa 1765 or attributed to James Whittle (d.1759) and Samuel Norman (1731?-1782). The ornament is principally of two volutes lower corners, extending into palm fronds with ribbons and flowers intertwined. Two volutes and more clusters higher up. The top consists of a large asymetric pierced acanthus ornament with fields either side and lower down of pierced lattice work.
Provenance
Supplied by James Whittle (active 1731-d.1759) to the 2nd Lord Leconfield ((1830-1901) in 1869-1872. Thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
