Caption
An original marble portrait bust of Charles I by Le Sueur, dated 1631, is in the V&A, London. It is the earliest bust of the monarch by Le Sueur and his use of marble is unique as he specialised in bronze. This is actually a stone version of the 1635 bronze type with embossed armour and a lion's head in the centre and on each shoulder. The sculptor had arrived in England in 1625 to be employed by the English king, having spent a decade at the court of Louis XIII, brother of Charles’s wife Henrietta Maria.
