Summary
Watercolour on paper, The Marble Hall, Petworth: George Wyndham, 1st Lord Leconfield (1787-1869) seated at his Desk by Madeline Campbell, The Hon. Mrs Percy Wyndham (1835-1920), circa 1865. The Marble Hall in circa 1865, with Lord Leconfield seated at his desk and a grand piano to the left. The 1st Lord Leconfield made the room into a comfortable study after his wife's death in 1863, having been asked by the housekeeper, Mrs Smith to move temporarily to the south end during spring-cleaning. He never moved back, and the rooms between the Marble Hall and the south front became his private sanctum where he also slept. Madeline Wyndham's watercolour of c.1685 shows how he made himself comfortable in this vast room. According to Constance Leconfield: 'in 1867 this had long been disused [as the main entrance], owing to the draughts caused by the doors being opened..'
