Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Unknown Man (formerly called a Self-portrait), attributed to Jacopo Tintoretto (Venice 1518 - Venice 1594), late 16th century. A head-and-shoulders portrait of a bearded man, turned three-quarters to the right, gazing at the spectator, with a fresh complexion, a red-brown beard and wearing a reddish-brown dress. Formerly catalogued as by Tintoretto and a self-portrait but the military accoutrements on the frame suggest that it twas once also thought to be a portrait of a commander.
