Caption
Phillips was a leading English portrait and subject painter. He painted many of the great men of the day including scientists, artists, writers and explorers, and is particularly well-known for his portrait of Lord Byron in Albanian Dress (National Portrait Gallery). The portrait of Napoleon was painted from Phillips’ sketch, which he drew from life in Paris during the Peace of Amiens in 1802.
