Summary
Thirty hour English lantern clock, by John Holloway, Stroud, c.1730 Two-train posted frame construction movement with anchor escapement, long pendulum and count-wheel hour striking on bell. Remains of alarm work still present. Cast lead weight, lead doughnut counterweight and chains. Original iron back with mounting parts for alarm mechanism. Later brass side doors. Brass chapter ring to dial with roman numerals and half-hour markers. Alarm disc in engraved dial centre, which is signed: “ Jno. Holloway / Stroud”. Typical, brass late lantern clock case with urn finials and feet at the corfner posts and the bell support surmounted by a matching urn finial. Dolphin frets to the front and sides, the front fret only engraved. Note: the cast lead weight and counterweight, the top finial and the brass side doors are all later replacements from 1985. Holloway is recorded as working as a clockmaker in Stroud in 1740.
