Summary
Portrait miniature, oil painting on copper, John Hampden (1594-1643), British (English) School, c.1640. Oval. Head and shoulders portrait of a man, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, in a dark cloak falling white collar with a tassel. Dark eyes, brown hair, aged about 40. Sky background. Ancestor of Charles Pye of Wadley, Berks. Inscr. on old backing paper probably copied from the copper reverse. Oil on copper.
Provenance
Indigenous collection purchased by Ministry of Works in 1954 and given to Dyrham Park in 1961.
