Summary
A pair of painted oak hall benches, Dutch, circa 1700 The shaped back profusely pierced and carved with scrolling foliage and centred by a cartouch with ribbon swags and a shield bearing an applied carved winged griffin. The down swept arms with similar carved decoration and joining a plank seat with dentil apron. Raised on shaped and carved solid end supports headed with flower head paterae, leaf carved front edge and scroll feet. Decoration refreshed.

A similar bench from the Netherlands can be seen in Gilbert, Christopher 'Furniture at Temple Newsam and Lotherton Hall' - plate 545. Hall seats such as this one were commonly placed in entrance halls of Dutch houses and painted to match the wall decoration. Other examples are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and Arniston, Scotland.
