Summary
A walnut and marble side table, the frame made by Alexander Hunter and Jonathan Fisher, English, 1701 The Carerra marble top with rouge marble crossbanded border and inset within a moulded walnut edge above a single frieze drawer and raised on turned baluster legs tied by an H stretcher, turned bun feet. The marble top was bought from London and the frame was made on site by Alexander Hunter and Jonathan Fisher in 1701. Another table in the Dyrham collection (NT452968) was constructed in the same manner also in 1701. See: Bowett, Adam 'English Furniture 1660-1714' ACC 2002 pg.282 figs.9.19 & 9.20 According to Bowett the shouldered baluster leg, which is used in an inverted form on chairs of the period is seen here for the first time on a documented table.
Provenance
The frame made by Alexander Hunter and Jonathan Fisher on site at Dyrham Park in 1701 The marble top bought in London at the same time. Indigenous collection purchased by Ministry of Works and given to Dyrham Park in 1961.
