Summary
Print, line engraving, Sir William Temple (1628-1699) (after Sir Peter Lely) by Jacobus Houbraken (Dordrecht 1698 - Amsterdam 1780). 1738. Head and shoulders portrait, with design of foliage above the sitter and below two books, classical figures and a bird clutching a branch in its beak. Underneath the portrait is printed “In the Collection of John Temple Esqr. J Houbraken sculp Amst. P. Lely pinxit. Imprimeo J & P Knapton Londini 1738.” William Blathwayt's first post was as Temple's Secretary at the Hague Embassy in 1668. In 1674 he effected the marriage of William of Orange and Mary Stuart. There is a drawing of his garden at Moor Park, Farnham, Surrey c.1690. Upon the Gardens of Epicurus 1692 describes the irregular Chinese example (Sharawadgi) of planting, prophetic of the English landscape movement. His books were in Blathwayt's library.
